The new primary school in Altenstadt offers primary school children modern pedagogical standards in an excellent environment for learning and interaction. After just two years of construction, the school opened its doors in the autumn of 2023 to nearly 240 students and 30 teachers.
The new building has much to offer: 12 regular classes, 2 small classes for children with special educational needs and, additionally, spaces for associations. The school and outbuildings with gymnasium and association spaces are wooden structures. Wood is the ideal building material for school buildings, because it is sustainable, provides for a particularly good indoor climate and lends a feeling of cosiness. The exterior walls are made of prefabricated solid wood elements. A total of 180 m³ CLTPLUS in industrial quality and 285 m³ of glued laminated timber were used in the construction. The interior is dominated by light, pleasant wood surfaces on the walls and ceiling that are left as a visible structure. It was important to the builders to use as much regional wood as possible to make the transport routes as short as possible. Thanks to the solid wood products used in construction, over 413 tonnes of carbon can be bound over the years, which will lead to the reduction of greenhouse gasses and thus contribute to climate protection.
