As part of a commission for the Municipality of Stockerau, architects Maurer & Partner, based in Vienna, Hollabrunn and Korneuburg, drew up plans to connect the two elementary schools Stockerau East and Stockerau West, situated opposite each other, using a floating, weatherproof bridge. The existing buildings were also extended using lightweight construction featuring state-of-the-art technology, including the addition of a new gymnasium. The planners' focus was on ecological construction using wood as a building material.
THEURL delivered 15 truckloads with a total of 699 individual components, of which only 63 elements were ordered in Industrial Quality. The interior walls, however, were built with visibility on both sides. The construction elements made of cross-laminated timber were largely left uncovered and their materiality is reflected in the building as natural wooden surfaces, ensuring an ideal learning environment and a healthy indoor climate.
The renovation itself was completed during ongoing operations, with the core renovation including thermal optimisation, the replacement of all windows and a complete overhaul of the electrical system. Other benefits that arose from connecting the two existing school buildings in Stockerau include the installation of an elevator, which ensures barrier-free access to all floors, and the expansion of the outdoor area to include a 60-metre-long Tartan Track with long jump pit.
