Pellet plant and CHP plant to be built in Assling

A sustainable cycle: from tree trunk to energy

The family-run company THEURL is once again sending out a strong signal in favour of sustainability and regional value creation in East Tyrol. With the construction of a state-of-the-art pellet plant and a combined heat and power (CHP) plant at the Assling site, the company has reached another milestone in its corporate history. These investments underline THEURL's commitment to utilising 100% of the raw material wood and at the same time creating innovative jobs in the region. With this forward-looking step, THEURL is pursuing a clear vision: the complete utilisation of the valuable raw material wood. In addition to the production of sawn timber, planed timber, glulam and CLTPLUS, the energetic utilisation of sawmill by-products such as bark and sawdust will also play a central role in the future. The new CHP plant generates enough electricity from these by-products to cover the entire energy requirements of the two sites in Assling. The resulting waste heat is used efficiently for wood drying, while the neighbouring village and the Thal swimming pool benefit from a cost-effective district heating supply.

Pellets

The planned pellet plant represents a further innovation: Around 80,000 tonnes of pellets will be produced annually - enough to supply around 20,000 households from autumn 2025. THEURL relies exclusively on sawmill by-products from its own production. These short transport routes and the sustainable use of resources make the pellets an environmentally friendly fuel with high energy efficiency.
