KLE-SCH climbing and shooting center
Sports facility with feel-good atmosphere
A “Klescher” is what the Carinthians say when there is a loud bang. So the name KLESCH fits this project like a glove. The Hermagor-based team of architects Ronacher transformed a former factory site in St. Daniel im Gailtal into one of the most modern sports centres for climbing and shooting in Austria.
While the elongated structures on the ground level were built using timber, the architects used reinforced concrete for the almost 20-metre-high climbing tower, the bouldering hall and the multi-purpose room.
The building itself is subtle and natural-looking. The shooting ranges are concealed in the ground, a ribbon in the form of a green roof hovers above the filigree wooden structure, and the façade surface of the tower rising in between, including the outdoor climbing wall, is reminiscent of a majestic rock head. This makes the ensemble appear as if it had grown directly out of the landscape and had perhaps always been there.
The generous use of larch and spruce wood lends the functional building an inviting, warm atmosphere from the outside and inside, and forms a successful contrast to the surfaces, some of which have been left raw. The rooms are bright and open, a cosy bar and lounge area and small terraces invite you to linger.
THEURL products played a key role in achieving this effect. For example, five trucks delivered 131 glued laminated timber components and 110 CLTPLUS components in visible and industrial quality to the construction site within just eight days.
