The spa hotel Vivea Bad Bleiberg
Wellness with wood
The spa hotel Vivea Bad Bleiberg has undergone a general renovation. A spacious extension was constructed with CLTPLUS in a short time.
Hotel extensions are always complex and planning-intensive projects. Here in particular, the timing and duration of construction play a decisive role for cost-efficient projects. This sector demands smooth coordination and as few middlemen as possible between all parties involved.
The Vivea spa hotel located in the market town of Bad Bleiberg is situated on the edge of the idyllical Dobratsch Nature Park. It offers a great example of a smooth construction process that also managed to stay on schedule. Thanks to good planning, impeccable logistics and a short construction time, the hotel was able to reopen after just six months. The hotel’s new therapy centre and indoor pool now await to welcome discerning guests with modern architecture.
Extensive construction work
This project required planners and contractors to reconcile a number of different issues. Fire safety imposed strict requirements on the wooden construction, and the large spans of the glued laminated timber trusses made for demanding statics. This, together with the large-format CLTPLUS ceiling elements, led naturally to a ribbed ceiling design.
Theurl supplied prefabricated wall and ceiling elements made of CLTPLUS for the new therapy centre and indoor pool. CLTPLUS was also used for the entrance roof and the new restaurant canopy.
Adapted to the existing structure with millimetre precision
The particular challenge of this project was to coordinate and perfectly connect the old and new elements of the building. The CLTPLUS elements, which were prefabricated with millimetre precision, and offered the ideal building material to meet construction requirements, as they enabled a perfect and seamless transition with the existing building. This allowed some of the new elements to be simply “pushed” into the existing building.
The special, curved shape of the indoor pool area did not pose any problems for the material or the designers. Since the CLTPLUS elements can be tied in almost any shape, the semi-circular shape of the indoor pool did not pose a problem from a structural point of view. Our partner Holzbau Lindner used a total of 175 m³ of glued laminated timber and 680 m³ of CLTPLUS in the project.
Wood, a true team player
CLTPLUS seamlessly interacts with other materials, in this case concrete and steel elements. In fact, the specific characteristics of the different building materials complement each other perfectly. Even though hardly any element of the wooden components resembles the other, this does not constitute a problem in modern joinery.
A recreational highlight
The extension and general refurbishment of the entire complex, including the timber extension project, was completed within six months. 309 beds are now available to guests in the 4-star health resort. The indoor pool area stands out as a particularly special highlight thanks to its timber design and many exposed wooden surfaces, which provide a pleasant atmosphere imbued with nature for guests to relax in.
